Holiday Festivities

This is a copy of a letter that will be sent home tomorrow regarding our holiday plans in the classroom:

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Instead of a “Holiday Party” each day during our Writer’s Workshop block, we are celebrating the upcoming holidays in our classroom with several fun festivities throughout next week! Each day, your child will participate in listening to a holiday “Read-Aloud” story and hand’s on activities. We have prepared a fun schedule and will need each student to try and bring in items requested.

* Monday: “Dress your Gingerbread Cookie Day!” We will read, The Gingerbread Boy and decorate our own gingerbread cookies.

* Tuesday: “Snow Globe Day” We will read, Snowflake Bentley and talk about snowflakes! Students will need an empty water bottle with the label pulled off to make a globe!

* Wednesday: “Paint a Snow-man or Snow-woman Day!” We will read, Snowmen At Night and make our own 3-D snowmen!

***Bring your family to lunch day! We will have a pizza party in the outside playground pavilion from 11:30-12:30 p.m. Please join us! $1.00 per person is required for those having pizza!

*Thursday: Polar Express Pajama Day! Students will come to school in their comfortable “PJ’s.” We will read, The Polar Express and watch the movie while sipping on delicious hot chocolate!)

*Friday: “Holiday Cards & Ornaments Day!” We will read, Silver Packages and make our own special packages for family members.

We look forward to a fun filled week! Please sign up for what you may be able to bring in by next Monday, December 15th. Thank you for your help!

Water Cycle

Monday, December 1, 2008

Did you know 75 % of Earth is made of water?

In Science, we have been learning about the stages of the Water Cycle. Water is found in many places such as lakes, rivers, oceans, ponds, puddles, reservoirs, and many other places.

The first stage is evaporation. This is a process where the water is heated and turned into a water vapor. The sun is the main heat source for this process. Following the evaporation stage is condensation. This is where warm and cold air collide and form ice crystals that condense and form droplets of water.

These water droplets eventually become too heavy and begin to fall in the form of rain, snow, hail or sleet. This stage is called precipitation.

The next stage is percolation. The water seeps through the soil and ends up in the water table. It then flows into the streams, lakes, oceans, and other bodies of water. The process is then repeated again and again.
We even made our own models of the Water Cycle:
